🏠 More roommates allowed in East Nashville homes?
A bill that would increase the number of unrelated people who can live together from three to seven needs just one more approval from the Metro Council to become law.
Some supporters pitch the ordinance as a way to help people afford rising home prices. The median sales price in the Nashville area last month was $450,000.
“City rules allow up to 12 tourists to stay in a home but no more than 3 actual residents,” East Nashville councilman Sean Parker, the bill’s sponsor, argued. “This is cruel and unfair and we can change it.”
Council member Courtney Johnston said she had “grave concerns” about the impact on neighborhoods, according to Tennessean reporter Cassandra Stephenson. “I don't know that this solves anything, but it has the potential to create a lot of very serious problems for our neighborhood,” said Johnston.
The sponsor deferred a final vote last night after council members repeatedly decreased the maximum number of roommates. Parker supported a limit of five people, but after the number dropped to four, the Metro Council agreed to delay the vote by two meetings.
